I first became aware of Ellen Sander through the thoughtful and complimentary liner notes she wrote for Love's fifth and final album (a greatest hits LP), for Elektra, titled 'Love Revisited'. This was the original version, with the fold out sleeve. Her impressive and obviously heart felt notes, fit perfectly with the carefully and well thought out chronological representation of Love's 4 LP (plus that rare blockbuster, mother of a 1968 45 rpm single A side, 'Your Mind and We Belong Together') output on Elektra. Sander's book is part memoir and part a collective history of her articles, that were published in Hit Parader, The L.A. Free Press, Saturday Review and Crawdaddy. What little there is in Trips about the Civil Rights Movement, leaves me with the impression that she had very little (if any) direct involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. She has many interesting stories to tell about her experiences with personalities she knew, events she experienced, among them, Monterey, Woodstock, Toronto, Altamont; as well as artists she interviewed, Paul Butterfield, Buddy Miles, Cass Elliot, Johnny Winter {a new piece about The Plaster Casters Of Chicago}, Led Zeppelin, and a lengthy and quite informative interview she conducted with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, backstage at the 1969 Toronto Peace Festival.
